THE FEAST OF THE VIETNAMESE MARTYRS
ST ANDREW DUNG LAC
AND HIS COMPANIONS,2008 HOLY NAME AND OUR LADY OF THE SACRED HEART, BOW
COMMON Our celebration of the Vietnamese martyrs here in For over 450
years the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been proclaimed in In 1820
severe persecutions broke out and from then until 1862, between
130,000 and 300,00 people courageously died in the Lord’s name. The martyrs
we honour today, are some of that vast number. They number one hundred and
seventeen men, women and children, which
included bishops, priests, men and women religious, and faithful
members of the laity, including children. All of them suffered terrible
torments for their Christian faith and their faithfulness to the Cross of
Christ – and they bore witness to Christ’s Church and to the true
religion. Some were beheaded,
others were hanged, others were burned or whipped to death, others died
during their imprisonment. These were
declared to be saints by our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II,
in 1988. Today is a
celebration of continuity. We must never forget our history. It is what
makes us who and what we are today. You are the heirs of the witness and
commitment displayed by these heroes of the Faith. As with them,
our Christian journey began when God first called us in to life. He has
called us every day since then to be faithful to him, to love him and
serve him. The greatest moment in our life after birth was the moment when
we were baptised – for in Baptism God calls us his children – he
promises us that he will never leave us. He calls us to be faithful to
him. Having called
us his children in Baptism, in Confirmation he sends us out filled with
the Holy Spirit. He strengthens us in our faith and gives us the courage
to be the witnesses of Jesus Christ in our world of today - just like the
Apostles, who were willing to die for their faith in Jesus – just like
the martyrs we celebrate today. Listen again to the words of the Book of Wisdom : If they experienced punishment as men see it, their
hope was rich in immortality : God has put them to the test and proved
them to be worthy to be with him. Their witness
and their examples will help us to place ourselves into God’s hands and
to be faithful, without any reservation.
God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom and
God’s weakness is stronger than human strength. Through our
Baptism and Confirmation we are not alone – Jesus is with us always to
the end of time. Each one of us is caught up in the prayer which Jesus
continuously makes for us in heaven. And it is his prayer that we will be
faithful to him. We can be sure that the Vietnamese martyrs, having laid
down their lives for him, in turn now offer their prayers for us as we
make our pilgrim journey to God.
